2011?

So apparently, I'm terrible at this blog thing right now. No internet isn't an excuse anymore. How about not enough time in the day? Bah, I'm not sure why but I never write on this little diddy. I'm not sure anyone's reading it besides me but still, no excuse. Does it count that I think about writing on here a lot?

Well, it's hard to give an update when it's months overdue but here goes: Work is great! For the most part I've sort of narrowed down my scope a little, it was a bit crazy for awhile but I'm trying to simplify! Two weeks ago myself and some 6th graders presented to the school board about our idea for a school garden and why we think it's a good idea. They said: "Go for it!" So we are starting what we can! I'm working on poop, getting manure and other organic materials donated and dropped off or picked up so we can start building soil. Our soil here isn't great, pretty thin and then right into clay so we've gotta get on the soil building ourselves! But our science teacher is going to start worm bins and I've started a minimal compost at the school to help out as much as possible. I've been in several classrooms with some on-the-go curriculum from my brain, having the students use their brains (+math, creative writing, and critical thinking skills) to meausre out our garden, determine amount of room for raised beds, etc. etc. So it's coming together slowly but surely and hopefully by spring we'll have seeds in the ground!

Meanwhile, I'm working with students and Susan Derry (6th grade teacher and my mentor at Oakland) to beef up our Walking Wednesday program and spreading the joy of biking. Bike safety classes have halted for the time being and will hopefully pick back up with bike rides in the spring time! This week I'm taking some high school students on a small bike ride and it looks like it will actually be sunny and warm!

ALSO... I have a program running called Funshop Fridays in which I have "sessions" four weeks in a row of different activities that students sign up for and attend when there is no school on Fridays. Last session I took my groups on a special field trip/hike and here are some photos from the trip.

For right now that's all I'm adding! I hope to add more soon!
